12 Strategies to Finding
Killer Airfare Deals

Continued  -  1  2  3

#5  Save More with Alternate Airports!

This strategy doesn't get talked about enough, and it can mean huge savings.  Many travelers, especially those in more densely populated areas, are within comfortable driving distance from two or three airports.  Airfare to a potential destination should be checked from each of the local airports, especially the smaller ones as they often can house surprising deals.

Most travel sites allow visitors to click a box indicating they are open to alternative airports both from the departure and arrival locations.  If plausible, use this option and see if you can drop your airfare further by utilizing other airports.

#6  Coupon Codes Can Add More Savings!

Once you have found the rock bottom price for your airfare, try and get it even lower by using coupon codes.

If the price is on the Travelocity website, continue through the checkout process (without actually entering a credit card or paying) until you get to a screen where it asks for a coupon code or promotional code.  When you find it, take note of the exact phrase used. Once you have identified this phrase, do a Google search for the phrase and the name of the site.  For example, for Travelocity the search would be for "Travelocity Promotional Code."

Different websites use different terms and phrases which is why it is important to search for the exact phrase used.

There aren't as many discounts as there once were, but it is still worth the effort.  Once in a while you will find a code that will take off $10 or $15 off each ticket.  The savings can really add up when your traveling with your family.

#7  Airline  Programs!

Just about every airline offers some type of miles or rewards program.  Aggressive travelers should research the programs offered by airlines serving their local airports.

For example, those in the vicinity of Fort Lauderdale should look into the $9. Fare Club offered by Spirit Airlines.  As of this writing, it costs $39.95 to join the club.  Members receive $9. off each ticket purchased ($18. round trip) and access to special fares starting at $9. each way.  As you can see, it would not take long to recoup the $39.95 membership fee.

Houston, Cleveland, and Newark travelers might consider the Continental.com Club offered by Continental Airlines.  It costs $25. to join the club, and members get $5. off each ticket purchased ($10. round trip).

Some of these programs are the same as the miles program while others are separate.  Either way, aggressive bargain hunters should research the programs offered at their local airports.

#8  Hubs!

Each airline has one or more airports from which they base most of their flights.  These are called hubs.

When looking for an airline to frequent in order to benefit from their miles and other loyalty programs, travelers should research which airlines use local airports as a hub.  Sometimes, you can better deals from hub locations, and you will have a lot more choices in destinations.

Larger airlines will have multiple hubs (United Airlines uses San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, and Washington) while smaller airlines may only use one airport.
